An experienced personal injury attorney can help someone who's suffered a head injury to receive fair compensation, but even the best attorney in the world can't negate the effects of a head injury caused by a bicycle accident. Head injuries are common in accidents involving bicycles, and a helmet helps to reduce the risk by
Since 2007, Gerling Law has purchased and distributed over 6,500 bicycle helmets to children in the Evansville and Tri-State area. In cooperation with the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation and numerous local charities and daycare centers, the Gerling Law team gives helmets for free to children whose families may have difficulty affording them.
Why Helmets for Kids?
More than 70 percent of children age 5-14 ride bicycles, and children are five times more likely to be injured in a bicycle crash than older riders. In fact, children ages 10-14 have a greater risk for traumatic brain injury than younger kids, likely because older children often don't wear helmets. And even if a child rides with a helmet at a younger age, don't forget - children grow, and helmets don't grow with them. In addition, bicycle helmets impacted in a crash must be replaced with a new helmet. The need for bicycle helmets is ever-present.
Reaching Out to Evansville and Tri-State Families
Gerling Law's decision to distribute bike helmets began in 2007 when the city council proposed an ordinance requiring children under the age of 16 to wear a helmet while operating a bike. Gerling Law seeks to be directly involved with the community, and in the discussion of the city council's proposal, it became apparent how important helmets are to safety and that many families would need help getting helmets for their children.
Although Gerling Law is involved in different community projects each year, this particular need fit the firm's mission to improve safety in our community. We understand the desire of every parent to make sure their children are safe and protected, even though sometimes their resources limit the things they can do. Gerling Law knows that many families have limited resources, and we don't want them to have to make a choice between something that is needed for the family versus keeping their children safe with a bicycle helmet.
2014 Bike Helmet Giveaway
Earlier this year, Gerling Law provided bicycle helmets to St Joseph Children's Home in Louisville, Kentucky. On May 21st, we gave a bicycle helmet to every second grade student at Vogel Elementary School. And on June 25th, we will be at Ivy Tech giving bike helmets to the students who are receiving free bicycles through the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation's 21st Century Summer Enrichment Program.
If you would like to know more about how your children or a group of children you are working with can receive free bicycle helmets from Gerling Law, contact Lori Crow of the Gerling Firm at 812-423-5251.
Through our experience working with individuals and families who have been impacted by a bicycle accident or brain injury, we know how heartbreaking it is when the one injured is a child. Our bike helmet giveaway program helps ensure that some of these accidents aren't as devastating as they could be. It is an honor and a privilege to be able to support our community in this way.
