It is important to understand that most accidents, regardless of their nature, can be prevented. However, alcohol-related accidents can always be prevented, and should never take place.

Different Types of Accidents Involving Alcohol

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, every single day, 28 people throughout the United States die in car crashes that involve an alcohol-impaired driver. Or, more specifically and heartbreaking, there is one death every 51 minutes due to drivers who get behind the wheel of a vehicle after consuming alcohol.

Though drinking and driving is one of the most common types of alcohol-related accidents, there are others, such as: assault, burn injury, brain injury, and in worst case scenarios, wrongful death. Simply put, alcohol can increase the risk of accidents since alcohol slows down the body’s responses and ability to properly react.

Specifically, consuming alcohol can affect a person’s judgment, alter their balance and coordination, impair both their vision and hearing, and create a loss of concentration. And while it’s perfectly acceptable for of-age individuals to drink alcohol, it’s imperative to always drink responsibly.

How to Avoid Accidents with Alcohol

To avoid alcohol-related accidents, never drive after having consumed alcohol, and never get into a vehicle with a driver who has been drinking. Further, always be aware of your surroundings when alcohol is present, and note that alcohol can still affect performance and judgment the day following a heavy drinking session.
