Nieraj Jain, MD., recently warned opthamologists of the link between a pentosan polysulfate sodium and a vision-threatening maculopathy.

The drug, currently sold under the name Elmiron by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, can cause the maculopathy to appear to be age related. Dr. Jain’s research also indicates that the longer the Elmiron is used, the more likely it is to cause a vision-impairing issue.

Opthamologists should closely monitor their patients that have been using Elmiron.
