Social Security Disability Benefits

Social Security Disability Benefits

What Benefits Are Provided By The Social Security Administration?

The SSA provides two types of benefits: Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

Supplemental Security Income

SSI benefits are available to low-income people who have not earned enough money to qualify for SSDI, and to children. The monthly payments are based on earnings and resources, and are capped at an amount determined by the SSA.

Social Security Disability Insurance

SSDI benefits are available to people who have earned enough work credits by working and paying into the Social Security system. The amount a disabled person receives under this program is based on their previous earnings, and differs from person to person.

Can I Work While Receiving Disability Benefits?

Yes. You can work and still receive disability benefits from SSI or SSDI; however, there is a cap on how much money you can earn each month. If you earn over a certain threshold at your job, you will no longer qualify for disability benefits.

Medical Benefits Provided By The SSA

The SSA does not offer special medical benefits to disabled workers. However, individuals who qualify for disability benefits through SSDI or SSI also qualify for Medicare.

There are two parts to the Medicare system:

Part A provides hospital insurance — this is free to disability recipients.

Part B provides medical insurance. Disability recipients can pay for this insurance through monthly premiums. However, there is a 24 month waiting period to qualify. The clock starts ticking the first month that an individual is eligible to receive disability benefits. This does not mean that you must actually receive the SSDI or SSI benefits. It is the time that you qualified for them. SSA will look back in time to determine the date that you became eligible for benefits and use that for Medicare purposes.
